Bwindi Local Woodcarvers Association

Nestled beside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Buhoma, our artisan collective transforms sustainably sourced fallen trees and macadamia wood into remarkable African wildlife sculptures. Beyond preserving indigenous craft, our carvers are active wildlife protectors who mentor the next generation.

A group of 19 local young men carve daily, working many hours to perfect their skills. Designing works of endangered species including the endangered mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), the elusive African forest elephant (Loxondota cyclotis) and the endangered white-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tricuspsis), the carvers aim to share the plight of their local native species.

Alongside our workshop, the woodcarvers CEO Onesmus Rutaro, founded Lucas Book Nook, a community library where around 40 local children gather daily after school to read donated books, discover conservation through art, and share inspiring stories.

Support local artists

Conservation through art is extremely valuable and can allow young artists to showcase their talents whilst ensuring they can create awareness and hope for our endangered wildlife. The Bwindi Local Woodcarvers Association supports young artists like Innocent and Alex, allowing them to learn from highly skilled carvers and to develop their skills. Their work is truly inspirational and had they lived elsewhere, their work would sell for an extremely high amount of money.

Crafting for conservation

Drawing for conservation

Carving wildlife out of wood is a very difficult and highly skilled commitment. Working on unique pieces, the local woodcarvers design all their own pieces using a variety of traditional tools and styles.

From tiny earrings to large pieces, their expertise cannot be replicated and perhaps, being brought up next to one of the most unique ecosystems in the world, they are at one with nature.
