Nourished children and filled classrooms

In the rural communities surrounding Bwindi, poverty prevents many deserving children from accessing formal education. Through Harbert Foundation Uganda, we remove financial barriers by providing vital school provisions and nutritious meals, giving vulnerable young people the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

School sponsorship - Our comprehensive support package

We work directly with families in the Bwindi area to ensure that rural children have everything required to enrol, remain in school, and focus on their academic journey without hunger or lack of materials holding them back. There are currently 50 local children registered with the Foundation with 15 of these sponsored through schooling. The remaining 35 are part-funded where possible, but we would be absolutely thrilled if we could secure educational opportunities for all our children, after all, it is not their fault education is not always accessible to them.

Tuition and fees

With more than 50 children supported by the Foundation, we try and find suitable sponsors where we can.

Schooling is not accessible for all in poor rural communities, and with school fees being $100 per term, the financial commitment from some sponsors is hard to secure.

Currently, we have 15 children sponsored through schooling, with us always looking for new sponsors. For $100 a term for primary school and $200 for secondary, it is hard to sustain but the consistency and routine for the children is what brings the opportunities.

If anyone can help sponsor a child, or contribute towards their schooling in anyway, please donate now.

The $100 a term, covers their essential school tuition fees, stationary, uniform and school shoes and two warm meals a day.

Uniforms and stationery

Within our school sponsorship scheme, each supported pupil receives tailored school uniforms, exercise books, pencils, and key stationery supplies necessary for daily learning and dignity.

The joy on the children's faces when they get measured up by the tailor is worth every dollar! The feeling of togetherness and being part of a community is worth more than a new pair of school shoes.

Beyond the 15 sponsored children, the Foundation provides education, safety and a friendly place to attend. Beyond the school opening times and during the school holidays, our children attend daily. This helps the vulnerable children whose families cannot afford educational costs to maintain some learning opportunities.

Daily warm meals

To combat hunger and sustain energy, we provide two warm, nourishing meals every school day, ensuring children concentrate better in the classroom.

Breakfast and lunch is prepared by our team, ensuring that all children registered at the Foundation eat home cooked fresh food regardless of whether they are sponsored or not.

We have a small flock of hens which we house for the care for, whilst ensuring we have a ready stock of eggs to provide protein for all. The children really enjoy climbing into the hen coop, collecting the eggs and passing them onto the ladies to be prepared for lunch.

We also grow our own vegetables in the grounds of the Foundation to help the children learn about sustainable harvesting whilst also providing excellent nutrition for our children.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Mandela)

Providing education and proper sustenance creates life-changing pathways that would otherwise remain closed to rural families. By fostering self-respect, cultural pride, and respect for nature alongside academic study, we equip children to build a brighter and more secure future for their whole community.

School & Food Support

Some of our children needing sponsorship

Meet Ansinguza Edson - awaiting a sponsor

Nine year old Edson is currently in primary two and wants to be an engineer when he grows up. Growing up in a rural Bwindi household where resources are scarce has resulted in little money to sustain the family. Edson's parents work  in stone quarrying so as they can get little money to help support the family.

Thanks to support from the Foundation, Edson now attends school. With support from donators, he is one of the first child in their family to receive a formal education and daily warm food. As you can see from his smile, Edson is a very happy go lucky child who has benefited greatly from our support.

We are desperate to widen our school sponsorship scheme so children like Edson can continue his education. Edson is very committed to learning and regularly attends the Foundation. Whilst here, he supports other children and actively joins in in all the activities. Edson, his family, and the Foundation are eternally grateful for the support, but if you can help sponsor Edson's school fees please get in touch.
